Morse code font styles

There is no special "Morse code font": Morse is just dots and dashes, and any font can display them. What changes the look is which dot and dash characters you use. Here is "I love you" in five styles; copy the one you like.

StyleDot / dashExample: I love youBest for
ASCII. -.. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..-Works everywhere. The safest choice for usernames, bios, code and messages.
Middle dot· –·· / ·–·· ––– ···– · / –·–– ––– ··–Typographic look. Dot U+00B7 and en dash U+2013; what most books and this site use in prose.
Bullet• —•• / •—•• ——— •••— • / —•—— ——— ••—Heavier, high-contrast. Bullet U+2022 and em dash U+2014; good for Instagram bios and captions.
Square▪ ▬▪▪ / ▪▬▪▪ ▬▬▬ ▪▪▪▬ ▪ / ▬▪▬▬ ▬▬▬ ▪▪▬Block style, reads well at small sizes. Small square U+25AA and black rectangle U+25AC.
Circle● ▬●● / ●▬●● ▬▬▬ ●●●▬ ● / ▬●▬▬ ▬▬▬ ●●▬Big circle U+25CF with rectangle dashes: the "bracelet" look used in Morse code jewelry.

Which font makes Morse look right?

Use a monospace font (Courier, Consolas, Menlo, Roboto Mono) whenever you can: every dot and dash takes the same width, so the spacing between letters and words stays visible. In a proportional font like Arial, a row of periods collapses into a thin line and words run together. Most chat apps let you force monospace with backticks: on Discord, wrap the code in ` characters.

Will a decoder still read the fancy styles?

Ours will: the decoder normalizes ·, •, ● and ▪ to dots and –, —, ▬ to dashes before translating. Other tools may not, so if you want a message to be machine-readable (a puzzle, a username, an API call), stick to the plain ASCII period and hyphen.

How to paste Morse code into Instagram, Discord, Roblox and more

Instagram and TikTok bios

Bios collapse multiple spaces and ignore line breaks on some devices, so use the slash convention for word gaps (.. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..-) rather than relying on spacing. A short phrase such as "I love you" (.. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..-) fits comfortably in the 150-character bio limit. The bullet style (• —) stands out best on a phone screen.

Discord

Discord renders Markdown, so a line of hyphens can turn into a horizontal rule and asterisks into formatting. Wrap Morse in backticks (`.... ..`) to get a monospace block that keeps every character exactly as you typed it. For a multi-line alphabet use three backticks before and after the block.

Roblox and games

Chat filters in Roblox and other games may block long strings of punctuation or interpret them as spam. Keep messages short, use plain ASCII dots and hyphens, and add a space between every letter. If the filter still blocks it, send one word at a time. Most game chats do not support Unicode symbols like ▬, so avoid the fancy styles there.

WhatsApp, iMessage and SMS

All three handle plain Morse perfectly and also display the Unicode styles. On iMessage, long dashes may be auto-corrected: type the message, then check that "--" did not become "—" unless you wanted it to. Our decoder reads both anyway.

Usernames and gamertags

Most platforms allow periods and hyphens but not spaces or slashes in usernames, so a Morse username has to be a single character or a word with the gaps removed, such as ...---... (SOS). Check the platform's allowed-character list first.

Tattoos, bracelets and engravings

Copy the plain version and hand it to the artist or jeweler together with the plain-text message, so they can double-check the dots and dashes. The Morse code tattoo guide and jewelry guide cover spacing and layout.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy and paste Morse code?

Click any "Copy" button on this page and the Morse code goes to your clipboard; then paste it with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac) or long-press and Paste on a phone. For custom text, type it into the Morse code translator and press its Copy button.

Is there a Morse code font?

Not really: Morse code is written with ordinary characters (a period and a hyphen, or Unicode dots and dashes), so every font can display it. What you want is a monospace font such as Courier or Consolas, which keeps all the dots and dashes the same width so the spacing stays readable. Some decorative fonts replace letters with Morse patterns, but text set in them cannot be copied as Morse.

Why does my Morse code look wrong after pasting?

Usually one of three things: the app collapsed multiple spaces (use slashes between words), the app auto-corrected "--" into an em dash (harmless for reading, but switch to the ASCII style for machine decoding), or the font is proportional and the dots crowd together (use a monospace font or a code block).

Can I paste Morse code with the fancy symbols into a decoder?

Into ours, yes: it converts ·, •, ●, ▪ to dots and –, —, ▬ to dashes automatically. Other decoders may show question marks instead. When in doubt, copy the ASCII version.

What is the Morse code alphabet copy and paste version?

The block in the "Alphabet A–Z" box above: 26 lines in the form "A .-", "B -..." and so on, which you can paste into notes, a document or a chat. There is also a one-line version for bios and comments.
