Morse Code Tattoo: Ideas, Meanings and a Free Generator
A Morse code tattoo hides a word in plain sight: a name, a date or a promise reduced to dots and dashes. Type yours below to preview it in three layouts, then use the checklist to make sure the code is right before it becomes permanent.
Type something above to see the tattoo preview.
The preview keeps the correct proportions: a dash is three dot-widths long, letters are three dot-widths apart and words seven. Print it at the size you want and bring it to your artist as a reference.

Morse code tattoo ideas by meaning
The words people actually get. Click a card to load it into the generator; where a word has its own page, the link below takes you to the full breakdown.
A name
.-.. .. .-.. -.--
The most requested design: a child, a partner or a parent. Private to everyone except the people who know.
A date
----- -.... / .---- ....-
Birthdays and anniversaries as digits. Every digit is five signals, so keep dates short (day and month, or just the year).
Breathe
-... .-. . .- - .... .
A one-word reminder that fits on the inside of a wrist. Seven letters, mostly dots.
Strength
... - .-. . -. --. - ....
Popular after recovery or a hard year. Long enough to run along a forearm.
Always
.- .-.. .-- .- -.-- ...
A promise in six letters. Often paired between two people, one word each.
I love you
.. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..-
Three words, three rows when stacked. Matching couples and parent-child tattoos.
Family
..-. .- -- .. .-.. -.--
Six letters with a pleasing balance of dots and dashes. Common across the collarbone.
Freedom
..-. .-. . . -.. --- --
Seven letters that look good as a thin vertical line down the spine or the back of the arm.
Mom / Dad
-- --- --
Three letters, all dashes for M and O. Dad is the mirror image with more dots.
Initials
.--- / .-.
Two or three initials, separated by a word gap, make a tiny design that still carries a story.
Why Morse code works so well as a tattoo
A Morse code tattoo is a message that only reads as a message to someone who knows the code. To everyone else it is a clean row of circles and lines, which is why it sits comfortably next to minimalist and fine-line work. The meaning stays private, the design stays simple, and unlike script lettering it never looks dated because there is no font to go out of style.
It is also one of the few tattoo styles that is objectively right or wrong. A misspelled script tattoo is embarrassing; a Morse tattoo with one dash too short quietly becomes a different word. That is the trade-off, and it is the reason the second half of this page is about checking, not just designing.
Placement ideas
- Inner wrist or inner forearm. The classic spot for a single word in a single line. Comfortable for 10 to 25 signals.
- Forearm, lengthwise. Longer phrases like "I love you" or a full name and date, either stacked or as one long line following the bone.
- Collarbone. A word that follows the curve. Keep the dots large enough that they do not blur over the years.
- Ribs or spine, vertical. The vertical layout reads top to bottom and suits words with an even mix of dots and dashes.
- Finger, ankle or behind the ear. Only for very short codes: initials, "hi", a three-letter name. Skin here moves a lot, so ask your artist about minimum dot size.
- Matching tattoos. Couples often split a phrase, one word each, or both get the same word in different placements.
How to double-check before inking
Do all five. They take ten minutes and they are the difference between "always" and a word nobody can read.
- Start from the exact spelling.
Names especially: Lily and Lilly are different codes. Confirm the spelling with the person whose name it is.
- Generate, then decode.
Paste the generated code into the Morse code decoder and make sure the original word comes back. Then type the dots and dashes by hand from the printed design and decode that too.
- Check the stencil, not the sketch.
Your artist will redraw the design. Decode the final stencil symbol by symbol. Count dots and dashes against the stats in the generator.
- Agree on proportions.
Dash = three dots long. Gap between letters visibly bigger than the gap inside a letter. Gap between words bigger again. If the gaps are uniform, the word has no letters.
- Have a second person read it.
Someone who was not involved in designing it, with the Morse code chart in hand, should read the stencil back to you.
Common mistakes in Morse code tattoos
Uniform spacing. The most common error. If every gap is the same width, there is no way to tell where one letter ends and the next begins, and .- - (A T) looks identical to .-- (W).
Short dashes. A dash that is only twice as long as a dot starts to look like a fat dot after the ink settles. Insist on 3:1, and consider 3.5:1 for very small tattoos.
Tiny dots. Fine-line dots spread slightly over time. A dot that is barely a pinprick today may be a smudge in ten years. Larger dots, fewer letters.
Using American Morse by accident. Some old charts show American (railroad) Morse, which differs for several letters. Always use International Morse, the one on this site.
Decorative substitutions. Hearts for dots and arrows for dashes look lovely, but make sure they are still clearly two different lengths.
Meanings of popular Morse code tattoos

| Peace | .--. . .- -.-. . | Calm after conflict, inner balance |
| Mom | -- --- -- | Tribute to a mother, often in memoriam |
Design styles that keep the code readable
Plain line. Black dots and dashes, nothing else. Ages best, easiest to verify.
Beaded line. Dots as small circles and dashes as elongated ovals strung on a thin line, like a bracelet. A favorite for wrist pieces; the line helps the eye keep the sequence.
Stacked words. One word per row, left-aligned. Clear word gaps without needing extra width, ideal for "I love you" or a name plus a date.
Vertical column. Symbols stacked top to bottom with letter gaps as small breaks. Works along the spine, the side of the forearm or behind the ear. The dashes become short vertical bars.
Hidden in a design. Dots and dashes worked into a heartbeat line, a mountain ridge or a constellation. Beautiful, but harder to check, so decode the final artwork carefully.
Whatever the style, write the plain text and the plain code on the consent form or the artist's reference sheet so there is a record of what it is supposed to say.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What does a Morse code tattoo mean?
It means whatever word or phrase is encoded in it. The most common are names, dates, "I love you", "always", "breathe", "strength", "family" and "hope". To read one, decode the dots and dashes with a Morse chart or paste them into our decoder.
How do I make a Morse code tattoo design?
Type the word into the generator on this page, choose a layout (single line, stacked words or vertical), tick "Show letters" to check it, and print the preview as a reference for your artist. Keep dashes three times the length of dots and leave clearly larger gaps between letters than inside them.
Is a Morse code tattoo expensive?
Usually not. Most are small, single-needle, black-ink pieces that take well under an hour. Price depends on the studio minimum more than on the design. Longer phrases, color or integration into a larger piece cost more.
Where is the best place for a Morse code tattoo?
Inner wrist and inner forearm are the most popular because the line layout fits naturally. Vertical layouts suit the spine and the side of the arm. Avoid fingers and other high-movement areas for anything longer than a few letters, as fine dots blur there.
How do I check that a Morse code tattoo is correct?
Decode it back to text, twice: once from the generator output and once from the artist's final stencil, ideally by a second person using the official International Morse chart. Count the dots and dashes against the numbers shown in the generator.
Can I get a date in Morse code?
Yes. Digits are part of International Morse and are always five signals long, which makes dates long: a full date in eight digits is 40 signals. Many people shorten it to day and month, or use the year only, and separate the groups with a word gap.
Prefer something you can take off?
The same code works on a bracelet or a necklace, bead by bead.
